🇷🇺 Vyborg is an ancient medieval town in the Leningrad region, located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, 174 kilometers from St. Petersburg. It is four centuries older than St. Petersburg and is famous for its landmarks and medieval architecture, which blends with Art Nouveau and Soviet-era buildings.
🏰 Founded by the Swedes in 1293, the city changed hands multiple times. From 1710 to 1917, it was part of the Russian Empire, then belonged to Finland until the start of World War II, and since 1944, it has been part of the Soviet Union.
🎇 Vyborg is a city of contrasts, where winding medieval streets coexist with modern embankments, an Orthodox cathedral stands next to a Lutheran church, Russia’s oldest residential building sits alongside a Swedish fortress, and a Viking ship shares space with a hotel shaped like a cruise liner.
