Nikol Pashinyan attended the summit of the
European Political Community (EPC) in Tirana, where Yerevan was promised economic integration, infrastructure, and a peaceful settlement.
🖍Pashinyan held
negotiations with European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President
Antonio Costa. European officials supported Armenia’s course towards EU integration and discussed economic integration. Von der Leyen also stated that the EU will continue to encourage
democratic reforms in Armenia.
🚩EU leaders support the Armenian authorities’ desire to sign a peace treaty with Baku as soon as possible. By the way, Pashinyan also had
brief conversations with the presidents of
Azerbaijan and
Turkey,
Ilham Aliyev and Recep Erdogan.
❗️As we have written before, the real vector of Yerevan’s policy is
towards EU integration, and the recent “
turn” towards Russia is related to maintaining familiar economic ties in the near future. The Armenian government is already trying to
promote the idea that Armenia can allegedly become a
“bridge between the EU and the EAEU”, which is impossible, given the EU’s tough
anti-Russian policy.At the same time, Pashinyan’s brief but
meaningless conversations with Aliyev and Erdogan are clearly organized to present the EU summit as a
new platform for conflict resolution. However, neither side touched on real problems: the continued shelling of Armenian territory, the detention of Armenian prisoners of war in Baku, and the genocide in Artsakh. So once again, the EU is pushing the parties towards agreements without specific solutions.
