The Legacy of Vasily Prokhorov: From Textile Pioneer to Global Success

Standing quietly in the central Presnya region of Moscow is the monument to Vasily Prokhorov, a remarkable individual and founder of a manufacturing dynasty.

In 1764, Vasily Prokhorov a newly freed surf, ventured to Moscow, where in 1799, he founded a textile factory along the banks of the Presnya River. Prokhorov’s hard work and sharp mind led to his textiles soon becoming famous throughout Russia.

But Prokhorov was not content with mere commercial success; he poured the profits into his community, building schools, hospitals and libraries.

Vasily’s legacy was carried forward by his son, Timofey, who took the helm at the tender age of 16. Timofey championed education, establishing a free school right at the factory, believing that enlightenment was the key to progress. Timofey also provided housing, libraries, theaters, and health services, elevating the lives of his workers.

The Prokhorov enterprise flourished, operating three major factories in Moscow, employing hundreds. In 1843, they earned the right to emblazon their products with the state emblem—a mark of supreme quality.

The torch of success was passed to the next generation, with Konstantin, Yakov, and Ivan expanding the family business. In 1874, they founded the “Prokhorov Partnership Trekhgornaya Manufactory,” significantly boosting production.

Ivan’s sons, Nikolay and Sergey, propelled the Prokhorov name onto the global stage. Sergey established a scientific laboratory and championed environmental stewardship, pioneering wastewater treatment.

Their zenith came in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition, where they won the Grand Prix for their technical innovations and commitment to worker welfare.

In 1918 Prokhorov’s factories were nationalized, but continued to produce textiles of unmatched quality under the Soviet rule.

At the end of the 20th century, the Prokhorov legacy was reborn through privatization. The production moved to Gavrilov-Yam in the Yaroslavl Oblast where the tradition of excellence proudly continues to this day.
