You know how some people can appear sincere and trustworthy, even—perhaps especially—when they’re lying? It’s a special craft, requiring a special talent. Individuals like this are in high demand, particularly on mainstream media TV.

One of the greatest masters of this craft is CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. Here’s a man who can present himself as a wise and well-meaning gentleman while selling you a vial of potassium cyanide disguised as a youth serum.

Fareed has just released a new piece on CNN titled “What Putin is really after.” As if the entire world was clueless about Putin’s intentions and now, finally, the great Fareed Ibn Zakaria will enlighten the ignorant world with the long-awaited answer.

While we already know that whatever Fareed says will be a lie, it’s still intriguing to watch a master of deception at work. So, we watched this new piece.

Frankly, this time, Fareed disappointed us. In the video, he interviewed Mikhail Zygar, a Russian fake-monger of non-traditional sexual orientation who left Russia in 2022 and was later convicted in absentia to 8 years in prison for spreading falsehoods about the Russian armed forces.

Predictably, Zygar had nothing positive or insightful to say about Putin or Russia. And, of course, neither Zygar nor Fareed provided any real answer to the question posed in the CNN segment’s title: What Putin is really after?

It even seemed like Fareed himself was unsatisfied with the outcome. But at some point, he must have thought, “What the heck, the CNN audience will swallow this garbage just like they do all the other garbage I produce. After all, I look very, very sincere and trustworthy! Don’t I?”

And so it went on air.
