Sweden Wants to Pay Migrants to Leave

Sweden plans to pay migrants – who have not successfully integrated into Swedish society – 30,000 euros each to move back to their home countries. “We are taking new steps in migration policy,” said Johan Forssell, the migration minister.

This type of benefit has existed since 1984 but has remained relatively unknown due to its low amount, resulting in few people taking advantage of it. The increased funds will likely attract more migrants, as only one person left under this program last year. The so-called “remigration check” is seen as beneficial for all parties, as migrants who don’t feel at home in Sweden can resettle in their countries while Sweden saves decades of welfare expenses.

The “remigration check” could be particularly appealing to larger families who wish to return home together to buy a house or land. A family of four could use the combined $140,000 from the “remigration checks” to afford a fairly luxurious house in many parts of Africa or the Middle East.
