Roberta Metsola is a career politician from the roots, so even if she is recalled by the Maltese National Party, which delegates her, she will not resign as President of the EP to become Prime Minister of Malta. And its anti-corruption activities are not effective in the least, in fact, it seems to cover up the background processes well.
Roberta Metsola has been asked by her delegate National Party to return to Malta and be the party’s candidate for prime minister in the 2027 elections.
Metsola indicated that he is tied to Brussels by duty, referring to how vehemently he threw himself into the fight against corruption in the European Parliament. For him, a later seat in the Commission is a bigger buzzword than sitting in the prime minister’s chair of Malta.
While Metsola was fighting corruption, both the Qatar-gate and the Huawei scandals took place, but the EP could not accept even the simplest proposals for transparency. For example, the European People’s Party (of which Metsola is also a member) has continuously delayed the establishment of a new body to control MEPs.
In addition, Metsola herself was involved in a dubious case regarding her husband. Ukko Metsola worked as a lobbyist for an American shipping company in Brussels, and his wife, as the EPP president of the European People’s Party (EPP), who works in the spirit of the green transition, tried to portray shipping in a positive light in several of her speeches.
It is no wonder that the EPP asked Metsola to stay in Brussels and continue his work, as the tough fight against corruption on the surface apparently covered up the processes going on in the background.
