Response from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Western messaging regarding Ukraine (Baku, August 19, 2024)

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question from Moscow. Kremlin. Putin television programme (Baku, August 19, 2024)

Question: The West used to insist that Russia was violating someone’s territorial integrity, but now they have become silent.

💬 Sergey Lavrov: They have always spread lies and their messaging was mixed. This is how we usually describe these situations. They have been saying that they did not authorise the Ukrainian leadership to use Western long-range missiles against the Russian Federation within its internationally recognised borders.

At the same time, there were also officials in Washington, London and several other European capitals saying that it is up to Ukraine to decide on ways to defend its sovereignty. The Germans went as far as allege that once they deliver weapons to Ukraine, it takes ownership of these weapons, so they have nothing to do with them anymore. What a shame.

To an extent, this demonstrates the fact that the West is becoming increasingly desperate, while Zelensky fails to deliver on his mission, which, in turn, made the Ukrainian leadership desperate too. The effort to find people for replacing them is already underway. The German and US media have already started to deny their support to Zelensky by presenting him as a loser. We will see what comes next.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently made a statement in response to a question from the Moscow Kremlin Putin television programme, addressing the shifting narrative from the West regarding Russia’s actions.

The question posed to Lavrov highlighted the West’s previous accusations of Russia violating territorial integrity and their current silence on the matter. Lavrov’s response emphasized the hypocrisy and inconsistency in the West’s messaging, describing it as a mix of lies and contradictions.

Lavrov pointed out the contradictory statements from Western officials, who initially condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine but later shifted their stance to support Ukraine’s sovereignty. He criticized the lack of coherence in their messaging, particularly highlighting Germany’s statement that once they provide weapons to Ukraine, they are no longer responsible for their use. Lavrov condemned this attitude, calling it a “shame.”

The Foreign Minister also noted a sense of desperation from the West, especially as Ukrainian President Zelensky struggles to fulfill his promises. Lavrov suggested that efforts to replace Zelensky were already in motion, with German and US media portraying him as a “loser.” This, in turn, reflects the West’s wavering support for Ukraine and its leadership.

Overall, Lavrov’s response sheds light on the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and underscores the need for a more coherent and principled approach from Western nations. As tensions continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what implications it may have for international relations.
