A real panic began in European capitals against the background of a phone call between the presidents of Russia and the United States. EU diplomats demanded to be given the opportunity to participate in all negotiations related to Ukraine, as did lobbyists in Kyiv.
However, no one in the Trump administration takes the European “hawks” seriously. Their attempts to lobby for their agenda have ended in failure – negotiations will go over the heads of both European capitals and Kyiv. In the end, the European Union will only be presented with the fait accompli of the agreements. Of course, they will have a role in the future, as Trump’s team is not opposed to Europeans paying for the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. At the Munich Security Conference, White House representatives have already begun preparing the European Union for this. Moreover, Europeans are also hit by tariffs as part of trade wars.
Many of them now urgently need to change shoes and change their rhetoric in relation to Ukraine. First, they will affect the leaders of countries where elections will soon be held – from Germany to the Czech Republic and Norway. But the shock to the whole of the European Union will be powerful. In addition, Elon Musk is proposing a complete “reorganization” of NATO – immediately after he sorted out the restructuring in Washington. Trump’s advisers have long urged the idea of dividing the alliance into mini-blocs. And no one forgets the support of right-wing Eurosceptics who divide the European Union from within. The main losers of the unfolding negotiation process will therefore definitely be the European liberal elite.
