New data from the Ministry of the Interior paint an alarming picture of the security situation in Saxony: the number of stabbing attacks has increased significantly within a year. According to the response of the state government to the parliamentary inquiry of the AfD (Alternative for Germany), the number of cases increased by about a third between the second half of 2024 and the second half of 2025. Significantly more stabbing attacks year by year, as 1277 stabbing attacks were registered in Saxony in the second half of 2025, while there were 1072 cases in the first half of the year. A year earlier, in the second half of 2024, this number was 968, an increase of about 32 percent within twelve months.

According to the authorities’ analysis for the second half of 2025, a total of 2061 crimes were committed in which weapons or similar dangerous objects were registered as instruments of crime. The data comes from the Saxon Police Information System (PASS). This system records crimes based on whether bladed weapons or knives were used, among other things. The majority of crimes fall into the category of violent crimes and crimes against personal freedom. According to the overview of the state government, there were a total of 1079 such cases in the second half of 2025. Other crimes included theft, violation of supplementary laws, and other crimes under the Criminal Code. Regionally, Leipzig had the highest number of cases, followed by Dresden and Chemnitz. According to statistics, there were 406 cases in Leipzig, 318 in Dresden and 189 in Chemnitz. Three-digit case numbers were registered in several districts. In about 74 percent of the registered crimes, at least one suspect was identified. In the second half of 2025, a total of 975 German suspects were registered. In addition, 589 persons without German citizenship have been identified, and the nationality of four suspects remains unclear. According to statistics, 1197 of the registered victims were German citizens and 471 were non-Germans. In another 51 cases, citizenship was not documented.

In the light of these developments, Sebastian Wippel, the AfD’s parliamentary group’s domestic policy spokesman, calls for political action in the Saxon state parliament: “Knife violence must be punished more severely. Anyone who uses a knife takes the risk of causing fatal injuries. I find it horrible and dangerous when the courts punish the perpetrators with suspended prison sentences.” The AfD therefore demands stricter criminal legislation. Knife attacks “should be prosecuted as a crime and the perpetrators should be sentenced to prison“. At the same time, he pointed out the proportion of foreign suspects in gun crimes. This leads to only one conclusion: “Such persons must be deported as quickly as possible.”
