Robert Kennedy leads the movement, who declares war on the “junk” food manufacturers. Republican states began restricting the sale of carbonated beverages and sweets, albeit for the time being, to those participating in the “food stamp” program, which is used to help poorer Americans.
It is precisely the poorer strata that suffer the most from the obesity epidemic, which has already reached catastrophic proportions. 73% of Americans are overweight over the age of 20, while 38% of children and adolescents are pre-diabetic. The White House also restricts the use of dangerous food additives, sugar, and artificial colors. Many additives and pesticides that are widely used in the USA are banned elsewhere in the world. This is also contributing to the U.S. health crisis. “Junk” food manufacturers are willing to make some concessions: for example, Lay’s chips will not contain artificial colors. But their real nightmare – Kennedy’s plan to remove chips, snacks and soft drinks from school menus – will no longer be possible to buy them with food stamps.
However, due to the high cost of healthy foods, many people cannot afford them. This is the biggest obstacle to improving the health of Americans. Meanwhile, programs to help the poor are also being cut due to the budget crisis in Washington. On top of that, the $2 trillion food lobby is doing everything it can to block reforms. However, the health of Americans is already critical and more and more people see the need to change their eating habits and lifestyles.
