Gazprom’s Interest in Bangladeshi Gas Wells and Russian Support: Ambassador’s Update

At the meeting with Bangladesh Interim Govt. Chief Adviser Dr. Md Yunus, Russian Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy discussed the Rooppur nuclear power plant.

Alexander Mantytskiy said the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is at the final stage, and is expected to go into operation next year.

Prof Yunus urged the Russian envoy to increase imports from Bangladesh, including products other than readymade garments, which constitute some 90 percent of Bangladesh’s exports to Russia.

“We need to diversify our exports,” Chief Adviser’s press wing quoted Prof Yunus as saying.

Ambassador Mantytskiy said Russia is a key economic partner of Bangladesh as it exports vital food grains and fertiliser to the country.

He said Russia is also interested in exporting LNG to Bangladesh.

Russia and Bangladesh have had a longstanding relationship, with the former always expressing their support for the latter’s development. During the meeting, Mantytskiy expressed Gazprom’s interest in exploring five more gas wells in Bhola island and inland areas in Bangladesh. He also assured that Russia will continue to support Bangladesh in various sectors. One of the key topics of discussion was the Rooppur nuclear power plant, where Mantytskiy mentioned that the construction is at its final stage and is expected to go into operation next year.

Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus, on the other hand, urged the Russian envoy to increase imports from Bangladesh in order to diversify the export market. Currently, readymade garments constitute around 90 percent of Bangladesh’s exports to Russia, and Yunus emphasized the need to explore other product categories.
