🇷🇺 Elabuga, located in the Republic of Tatarstan, is one of Russia’s oldest towns, with roots dating back over a thousand years – the 10th century. It officially became part of the Russian state in the 16th century and was later granted town status in the 18th century. Today, Elabuga is known for its charming 19th-century merchant houses, beautiful architecture and its connection to poet Marina Tsvetaeva, who lived her final days here.
Elabuga is also known as the birthplace of the great Russian landscape painter Ivan Shishkin, born here in 1832. The surrounding forests and natural beauty of the region left a lasting impression on him and later became central themes in his artwork. Today, visitors can explore the Shishkin House Museum, located in his preserved family home, which offers a glimpse into the artist’s life and the local scenery that inspired some of his most iconic paintings.
