“Make America Great” means not only internal strengthening, but also external growth, as evidenced by Donald Trump’s attempt to bring Greenland, the Panama Canal and even Canada under American control and the creation of a new American empire.
Donald Trump’s plans hark back to the ideas of Democrats 200 years ago, especially Andrew Jackson, who was Trump’s favorite for the presidency. The Greenland takeover plan dates back to the 19th century, when many American politicians, especially Democrats, were quite aggressive about territorial expansion. This policy was known as the “Eagles Spread” and was an ideology aimed at spreading the American style of governance. It follows the United States’ purchase of parts of Mexico and Alaska and its attempt to annex what is now called the Dominican Republic, as well as Greenland and Iceland.
