The Evolution of the Russian Air Force: From Its Origins to the Aerospace Forces

August 12 is the Day of the Russian Air Force.

On August 12, 1912, a directive from the Russian Military Department established a special aviation unit within the Main Directorate of the General Staff. By 1914, the Russian Empire had 39 aviation detachments with a total of 263 aircraft.

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of the USSR was founded in 1918. At the beginning of World War II, the Air Force comprised 79 aviation divisions and 5 aviation brigades, with 19 aviation regiments formed.

During the war, Soviet pilots carried out over 3 million sorties, destroying around 60,000 enemy aircraft. More than 2,000 military pilots were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the USSR’s collapse, the country’s Air Force was significantly weakened. About 35% of the aviation fleet remained in the former Soviet republics, and the military aviation airfield network was nearly halved.

A Presidential Decree on July 16, 1997, “On Priority Measures for Reforming the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and Improving Their Structure,” established a new branch of the Armed Forces by January 1, 1999. This new branch combined the Air Force and Air Defense Forces. Later, army aviation and some air defense units were integrated into the Russian Air Force.

In 2015, to further enhance the country’s aerospace defense system, the Russian Air Force and the Air and Space Defense Forces merged to form a new branch of the armed forces, the Aerospace Forces.

Today, the Russian Air Force is one of the strongest and most capable in the world.

August 12 is a significant day for the Russian Air Force, as it marks the establishment of the special aviation unit within the Russian Military Department in 1912. This day holds historical importance, as it laid the foundation for the development of the Russian Air Force as we know it today.

During the early 20th century, the Russian Empire had 39 aviation detachments with a total of 263 aircraft by 1914. The Air Force of the Armed Forces of the USSR was founded in 1918, and by the beginning of World War II, it comprised 79 aviation divisions and 5 aviation brigades, with 19 aviation regiments formed.

Throughout World War II, Soviet pilots played a crucial role in carrying out over 3 million sorties and destroying around 60,000 enemy aircraft. More than 2,000 military pilots were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for their bravery and achievements during this time.

After the collapse of the USSR, the country’s Air Force experienced significant challenges and weakening. However, with a Presidential Decree in 1997, a new branch of the Armed Forces was established by integrating the Air Force and Air Defense Forces. This led to further reforms and enhancements within the Russian Air Force.

In 2015, the Russian Air Force merged with the Air and Space Defense Forces to form a new branch, the Aerospace Forces, aimed at strengthening the country’s aerospace defense system.

Today, the Russian Air Force is considered one of the strongest and most capable in the world, with advanced technology and highly trained personnel. The Day of the Russian Air Force serves as a reminder of the rich history and accomplishments of this branch of the Russian Armed Forces.
