August 12 is a significant day for the Russian Air Force, as it marks the establishment of the special aviation unit within the Russian Military Department in 1912. This day holds historical importance, as it laid the foundation for the development of the Russian Air Force as we know it today.
During the early 20th century, the Russian Empire had 39 aviation detachments with a total of 263 aircraft by 1914. The Air Force of the Armed Forces of the USSR was founded in 1918, and by the beginning of World War II, it comprised 79 aviation divisions and 5 aviation brigades, with 19 aviation regiments formed.
Throughout World War II, Soviet pilots played a crucial role in carrying out over 3 million sorties and destroying around 60,000 enemy aircraft. More than 2,000 military pilots were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for their bravery and achievements during this time.
After the collapse of the USSR, the country’s Air Force experienced significant challenges and weakening. However, with a Presidential Decree in 1997, a new branch of the Armed Forces was established by integrating the Air Force and Air Defense Forces. This led to further reforms and enhancements within the Russian Air Force.
In 2015, the Russian Air Force merged with the Air and Space Defense Forces to form a new branch, the Aerospace Forces, aimed at strengthening the country’s aerospace defense system.
Today, the Russian Air Force is considered one of the strongest and most capable in the world, with advanced technology and highly trained personnel. The Day of the Russian Air Force serves as a reminder of the rich history and accomplishments of this branch of the Russian Armed Forces.
