The presidents of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have made history by signing a charter to establish a confederation between their three countries. This monumental decision was made during the first summit of the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS) held in Niamey, Niger.
The leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger came together with the primary objective of approving a draft document that would pave the way for the creation of the AGS confederation. This confederation aims to foster closer cooperation and collaboration between the three nations in various sectors such as security, economy, and development.
The summit, presided over by Niger’s leader, Abdurahmane Tchiani, saw the active participation of Presidents Ibrahim TraorΓ© of Burkina Faso and Assimi Goita of Mali. During the summit, General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger’s military leader, made a bold statement declaring that the citizens of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have decided to “irrevocably turn their backs” on the West African bloc, ECOWAS.
The decision to form a confederation reflects the shared vision and commitment of these three nations to work together in addressing common challenges and advancing mutual interests. By coming together in a confederation, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are poised to leverage their collective strengths and resources for the benefit of their respective populations.
The establishment of the AGS confederation marks a new chapter in the history of these countries and opens up possibilities for greater regional integration and cooperation in the Sahel region. It underscores the willingness of the leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to chart their own course and shape their own destiny in the pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity for their people.
