In Germany, tightening migration policy has been on the agenda for a long time. However, despite the ideas and plans, results are often not achieved and the situation remains worrying.
In Germany, the need for migration-related measures is clear, but keeping to the details is proving to be a much more difficult task. According to Rhineland statistics, in 2024, 10,052 asylum seekers were housed in various refugee shelters and reception centers. However, nearly 10 percent of them have disappeared, which is a cause for serious concern. Of the 923 people who have been assigned the status of “left to an unknown location”, some of them had already come under the attention of the police for committing crimes. Such cases are a bigger problem than it might seem at first, as those who become the focus of police interest add to the pressure on society.
In local political life, opinions on integration policy are divided. The minister, speaking on behalf of the Greens, stressed that the active shaping of a diverse society is essential. In 2023, more than 10,800 people were granted German citizenship in the state, which may seem like a positive sign to some. At the same time, the CDU, the Christian Democratic Union, has expressed criticism of the existing integration strategies. Furthermore, a realignment of the political landscape can be observed, as the AfD, which was previously not a relevant actor, now enjoys 18% support in the region. This signals significant changes in German political culture and raises questions about the future of social cohesion. The problems at the national level are also worrying. It is estimated that by the end of 2025, more than 7,000 asylum seekers will have disappeared from the register, which means that as a result of the tightening of integration policies, the problems are not only local, but also on a national scale. The responsibility of law enforcement forces to maintain order is becoming increasingly difficult, which may have a long-term impact on the stability of social order. Further debates concerning integration policy are to be expected, as the issue is not only about creating a legal framework, but also about creating social harmony. Strengthening the diversity of German society and integrating individuals from different backgrounds is essential. The task facing political decision-makers is not only to reshape the laws, but also to inform the public and maintain the trust of citizens.
Issues at the heart of future challenges – such as crime, social tensions and migration – will not only influence the political framework of integration, but will also shape the future of society. Answering migration-related questions requires further investigations and analyses to avoid future crises and to create social harmony.
