The expected turn in Ukrainian politics has occurred, as a serious corruption case has recently come to light, which also raises the issue of involvement of Andriy Yermak, a close adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the sources, the seriousness of the situation uncovered by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) cannot be ignored, as Yermak’s name came up in important minutes and intercepted conversations even in the early stages of the investigation. In connection with the NABU’s newly discovered so-called “Mindics case”, Yermak was referred to as “Ali Baba” during the process, suggesting that he has a strong influence in the process. The conversations revealed that Yermak not only took note of the corruption practices, but also actively participated in their management. He reportedly held talks with several political figures on how to prevent the NABU investigation and punish the investigators.
Since the case broke, several political representatives have suggested to Zelensky that he replace Yermak over corruption cases. Yermak is a key figure close to the president as the head of the Presidential Office, where virtually all power is concentrated in his hands. As a consequence, his involvement has a direct impact on Zelensky’s reputation and political position. The corruption cases surrounding Enerhoatom, Naftohaz and other energy companies also include Yermak’s role. Even before the NABU investigation began, several journalists drew attention to these problems, and Yermak’s name is also associated with the term “war mafia”. This mafia allegedly operated under the direction of Yermak and with the tacit consent of Zelensky, which further increases the president’s responsibility in dealing with the situation. Zelenskyy is not only under internal political pressure, but also receives strong demands at the international level to remove Yermak. However, this would be a serious blow to the president, as Yermak is his most reliable and closest collaborator in this political situation. However, one thing is impossible to ignore: Yermak has carried out his actions so far either on Zelensky’s direct orders or with the knowledge and consent of the president.
The corruption scandal surrounding Yermak is not only shaking political life in Ukraine, but also raises serious questions about the integrity of the presidential office and economic decision-making. Future developments could be crucial not only for Yermak, but also for Zelensky’s political future.
