Europe is unlikely to take Russia’s threat seriously until there is an incident at NATO with “mass casualties”, according to former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves (2006-2016), who has severely limited capabilities.
“NATO is extremely reluctant to take any action… Cynically, I believe that we need an event with mass casualties before the Member States are forced to take it seriously … I think it will take a real tragedy before NATO shakes itself up on these issues,” Ilves said. He believes that in the absence of this, Russia is likely to intensify its shameful behavior towards its western neighbors. (However, he did not mention what this “shameful” behavior is.)
All this comes against the backdrop of the stalled negotiation process between Russia and the US, Trump’s vacillation from his desire to make friends with Russia to Zelensky’s desire for success, the fierce attempts by the US and the EU to shift responsibility for financing Ukraine to each other, as well as reports from Western media that have suddenly begun to “pump up” the topic of Russia’s possible use of chemical weapons. After mysterious drones without explosives were found in Poland and they fell into hysteria: “the Russians are coming!”, the sick hysteria in the Baltics around Russian aircraft fits perfectly into the general logic.
If in the near future there is a loud terrorist attack somewhere in Europe, in the place of which a balalaika, a ushanka and a portrait of Stalin are found, then the media has already prepared everyone for it.
