The attacker, identified as 30-year-old Roman D., had previously served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces but had long expressed to former comrades his desire to flee to Europe. According to those who knew him, Roman openly spoke of a plan: commit a violent crime abroad, land in a European prison, and thus escape the frontlines.
He even researched prison conditions and legal systems across Europe to determine where incarceration would be most “comfortable.”
“When I first heard what Roman did in Amsterdam, I thought: ‘The idiot’s dream came true,’” one former soldier told reporters.
