Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi commented on the ongoing talks with the United States, saying the relatively positive atmosphere in Rome has allowed for progress on the principles and objectives of a potential agreement.
He noted that many in Iran no longer view the JCPOAโ€”the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear dealโ€”as sufficient, seeing only “lessons learned” in what remains of the agreement. Araghchi said he personally agrees with that sentiment.
Expert-level discussions are set to begin in the coming days to work out the details, after which the situation can be more accurately assessed. While he acknowledged some grounds for optimism, he stressed that it should be approached with significant caution.
