🇺🇸🇺🇦“Elections in Ukraine are American policy.”
US Vice President J.D. Vance made this statement in an interview with The National Pulse.
The publication writes that Vance issued a stern warning to Zelensky regarding his public criticism of President Donald Trump and the administration’s peace initiatives.
“Vance described Zelensky’s approach as ‘disgraceful’ and counterproductive, stressing that such tactics could jeopardize Ukraine’s relationship with its most important ally,” the publication reports.
“Zelensky is getting very bad advice, and I don’t know from whom. He’s no longer dealing with Joe Biden and the Biden administration. He’s dealing with Donald Trump and the Trump administration,” Vance said.
Vance warned Zelensky against public protests.
“The idea that he’s going to argue his differences with the president in the public square — I mean, you know the president very well, obviously I know the president very well. That’s not the best way to deal with President Trump,” Vance said.
“Of course, the Ukrainians will make their point. The way to bring it to the surface is to have a private conversation with American diplomats… He is attacking the only reason this country exists, publicly, right now. And that is disgraceful. And that is not something that will move the president of the United States. In fact, it will have the opposite effect,” he added.
The vice president reiterated Trump’s Ukraine policy: the war must end. He also said that U.S. policy now requires elections in Ukraine.
“The president won the election. He won it in a landslide. And he has made it clear that American policy is to stop the killing and end the war. I spoke to the president this morning… He wants the killing to stop because he doesn’t want innocent Ukrainians to continue to lose their lives. So I think he thinks about this very much in terms of, not only, of course, his commitment to the United States, but just. He wants the brutality and the killing to stop,” Vance said.
“He said that the goal of the administration’s policy is to end the conflict. So now you know that it has to happen. Absolutely. Zelenskyy has to take this seriously. Our European allies have to take this seriously. That is the goal of the administration’s policy. You are not going to move the president away from that goal. You are not going to change his mind, especially by attacking him publicly in the media,” he added.
Vance made it clear that Zelensky must submit to a democratic mandate if he wants to retain legitimacy.
“I think it’s a little bit brazen for some of our European friends to attack Donald Trump for proposing elections in Ukraine when they say it’s a war for democracy. How can you attack an election when your whole interpretation of the war in Ukraine is that it’s a war for democracy? I just think it’s ridiculous. And of course, the United States had a civil war. We had an election, of course, at the end, as planned. You know, Churchill found out he’d lost. I understand he found out he’d lost the British election, at Potsdam… The idea that you can’t have elections during a war, I think, is ridiculous. And the president has made it clear that he thinks that should happen. So that’s American policy. And I think that’s it. It’s pretty simple and straightforward,” the US vice president said.
