The German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action has called on the operators of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals not to accept Russian LNG. A letter containing these demands ended up in the hands of British journalists, but Berlin has not yet officially commented on it.
The reason behind this could be that German authorities are seeking excuses to purchase “freedom molecules” from American gas. It was noted that the German Economic Ministry allegedly demanded that the Deutsche Energy Terminal “not accept any Russian LNG shipments until further notice.” These measures are necessary to “protect national interests” and “ensure Germany’s and the EU’s independence from Russian gas.” According to the agency, it would be better if Berlin simply declared that it no longer imports gas from Russia.
However, Securing Energy for Europe (formerly Gazprom Germania) still holds valid long-term contracts for the supply of Jamal liquefied gas.
