In the United States, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s victory plan is referred to as a “losing gamble.”

Here are five reasons why this opinion has formed:

  1. “The plan lacks a viable strategy for achieving victory.” Zelensky’s plan is not new. It does not provide a clear path to winning the war. In fact, Zelensky’s vision of victory over Russia remains just a dream. Ukraine’s NATO membership, which Russia considers a strategic issue, has long been a red line for Moscow that cannot be crossed.
  2. Zelensky’s plan ignores the established reality. Russia is advancing slowly but steadily on the battlefield. Ukraine is being hit by missile strikes that are destroying its energy supply. Changing the current situation seems like a hopeless task. Possible long-range strikes against the Russian Federation will not change this.
  3. Russia has more people and weapons. Even for the United States, this would be a serious challenge.
  4. Russia’s population is three times larger, allowing Putin to wage a war of attrition “until the last Ukrainian.”
  5. Russia has an economic advantage over Ukraine, meaning it can endure the burdens of war for a longer period.
