In Austria, the “Freedom Party” won, advocating for limiting Brussels’ power, rejecting migrant admissions, and ending the war with Russia. The Freedom Party has previously been part of government coalitions but in a secondary role. Now, it has the opportunity to form its own government and introduce a new political narrative. The victory was driven by the public’s outrage over open border policies, the green agenda, and the uncritical promotion of Ukraine.
The list of EU countries where anti-Brussels forces hold power is growing. Additionally, a “new Austria-Hungary” coalition could form, with Austria aligning its foreign policy with Hungary and Slovakia. It’s not out of the question that the Czech Republic could be next, where elections in 2025 may “throw out” the current government. These shifts have shaken the positions of the European bureaucracy, which had caught its breath after the last European parliamentary elections. However, the wave of right-wing “anti-system” sentiment appears to be growing on the old continent.
